Over the past several months, one can't help but to notice the gradual increase in attention G4TV has been paying to the Indie Gaming world... and as corny as it may sound, this attention warms my little obsidian heart. Very recently, both on the web and in their cable TV shows, the folks at G4 have been dedicating noticeable attention to the Penny Arcade Expo, and as seen in the Sessler's Soapbox clip below, the G4 guys seem more than happy to do so. As this kind of attention grows, let's just hope that functions like PAX stay as described below and doesn't follow the negatively-implied overblown path seen in other media events such as Comic Con or the Festival de Cannes.

Retro Remakes Competition

Retro Remakes 2008 competition was launched just yesterday, and with nearly $10,000 US in prizes to be won the cream of the crop has to be that swanky gaming laptop worth $2,000 alone for the first place winner. (pictured above)

The competition runs from September 1st to December 6th 2008, with the results to be announced in January 2009. Contest rules and categories can be found at the official competition web site.

Not long ago, Bowja found his way into our notice, and from that moment, we knew we simply had to have the little dude in the Ninja Games section of our online arcade. Both Bowja the Ninja and Bowja the Ninja 2 are fun and one of a kind point-and-click puzzle adventures that are definitely worth checking out... so, please do so. :)

Anti-Video Game Bill

Speaking as someone who has resided in New York City over the past couple of months, it completely amazes me how much tax money seems to be wasted here. The latest apparent example of this is bill # S6401A/A11717 which has passed both the House and Assembly and is now in hands of NY Governor Paterson. Dubbed by some as the 'Anti-Video Game Bill', if passed to law, S6401A/A11717 would waste NY tax dollars on redundantly investigating video games, in spite of established information provided by developers and the ESRB... and given the various quality of life issues evident in "the Greatest City on Earth" there are honestly much higher priorities for NY resources and tax dollars than this frivolous effort.

Whenever most people think of playing games in their web browser, more often than not, they tend to think of Flash games. However, speaking as a game designer, I simply can't overlook the power of Java. That being said, I've recently created a browser-based version of Trippy Ballz as a little Java experiment. At some point this year, we're really hoping to release a number of cell phone games, including a mobile version of Trippy Ballz... but until then, feel free to point your web browser at Trippy Ballz Lite. It's a little twitchy and stripped down compared to Trippy Ballz 2, but it still retains quite a bit of the same kind of fun.

Yesterday, one of us received the following message in an email from the Video Game Voters Network. It isn't hard to argue that this is a solid win for gamers everywhere.

The proposed New Mexico video game tax was defeated and is no longer a threat! This is an important victory for our community and the Video Game Voters Network.

Last week, VGVN members in New Mexico sent letters to their state legislators to denounce the proposed bill that subjected video game purchases to an additional tax. Thanks in part to the swift action of New Mexico members, the New Mexico House Business and Industry Committee rejected the bill on a 9-0 vote. Many New Mexico legislators had never heard a constituent defend video games. By taking this step, members across the country can actively participate in defending future legislation.

The Sierra Club of New Mexico supported a video games tax to fund a government campaign to promote outdoor education for children. Adam Thierer, senior fellow at the Progress & Freedom Foundation, disagrees with such a tax. In an editorial on CNET.com, he wrote "legislators shouldn't be using the tax code to play the role of nanny for our kids. It is the responsibility and right of parents to determine how their kids are raised."

Proposed laws, like the one in New Mexico, put the fight for video games in perspective. We must continually remind our elected officials that as voters, gamers, developers, and parents, we will not support video games being singled out and treated differently than movies, books and television. When we do stand up and fight, we win.

Forbes.com has updated it's list of Top 25 Web Celebrities. Interestingly, as much as you gotta love episodic video silliness like Ask a Ninja, the focus of the list has shifted from homebound aspiring thespians on Youtube to bloggers. Even more interesting, and less surprising, in spite of all the bottom-feeding, get-rich-quick, wannabe John Chows crowding the blogosphere of late, the writers featured on this Forbes list all seem to conform to the simple old success adage of finding your niche through loving what you do.

Personal note: As someone who authors and co-authors a few different blogs, what this shows is quite refreshing. Sometimes when you are looking to promote your work and go sailing on the mass marketing ocean that is the world wide web, it can be very easy to lose sight of solid land.

Hey, my name is Ezell. I am a consultant for NinjaGirl Productions and a friend of Chris O'Connell. I have just finished a new software product called Newborn Notes. Like NinjaGirl, I am also an indie developer, but this is my real first desktop software.

The reason why I create software is because I want to know if movies like 'the Pursuit of Happiness' could happen to me. So in my mind, I asked myself if a guy with only 20 dollars in his bank account could become independently wealthy. Now I have the chance to find out. I took 20 dollars bought a domain and host, built a website, developed a small program and uploaded it. Please check it out and we will see!

Game Regulation and the Presidential Race

As you can infer from the mention of videogamevoters.org in our last post, federal laws that effect video games are a topic that the authors of this blog care a great deal about. Now, given the trials and tribulations American politics have faced in the past seven or so years, this topic is obviously not considered a pressing one found in the presidential debates for the 2008 race. However, when you think about the overall effect entertainment software has both on the present and the likely future of global mass media, and then include consideration for the notable beat-downs American freedoms have suffered in the past decade, one must admit that game-related laws are something that must be strongly addressed inevitably.

Earlier today, 1up.com posted a decent article on this topic, based on questions sent to the candidates by Common Sense Media. Unfortunately, as we've seen in the past, statements from politicians tend to be quite limited on this topic; this time with Democrats displaying little more than semantical differences in their opinions, and only one Republican chiming in with less-than-imaginative, traditionalist hot air. (yup, Romney)

Myspace Diabocle

In our last blog entry, we mentioned our fairly new Myspace.com profile page. Well apparently, that was our jinx move of the weekend.

Yesterday morning, the Myspace profile for NinjaGirl Productions received and unusually high number (hundreds) of unsolicited friend invites. Likely related, at some point later in the day, the profile page was inexplicably deleted.

*POOF*

We have since emailed Myspace a few times on the matter, but are yet to get a reply. Now this, in and of itself, is strange and frustrating enough, but here's the really odd and annoying part:

Today when we checked the email address associated with our Myspace profile, it turns out we are still getting a significant number of friend invites well after the profile disappeared. Yup, that's right, we're still getting emails that say, "So-and-so would like to be added as one of your friends" even though nothing really exists at our Myspace URL, and we can't even log into Myspace anymore!

Honestly, we don't know or care how this is possible; but regardless of Myspace's chosen level of responsibility on the matter, the fact is we are getting numerous emails generated and sent to us by Myspace in regard to something that doesn't even exist anymore... so basically, for all intents and purposes, our profile got deleted for no apparent reason and Myspace is now inadvertently spamming the crap out of us... yay.

Ninja-Girl.com: Relaunch Soon

From the perspective of a designer, I am always filled with cynical feelings whenever I see some variation of "Under Construction" or "In Progress" on a website for an extended period of time, whether it is regarding the website itself, or some project the website is promoting. As such, you can imagine I am very anxious to get the new version of the NinjaGirl Productions website up and running ASAP. At present, I anticipate a Halloween relaunch for the site, and it will feature at least 3 indie game titles at the time of relaunch.
